MAPS 2019 Awards Gala

Gala of Massachusetts alliance of Portuguese speakers

Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers

Another Gala tonight! I went to the Gala dinner of the Japan Society of Boston last night and today I went to another Gala event by MAPS. MAPS stands for Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese speakers and they work with and for the Brazilian, Cabo Verdean, Portuguese and other Portuguese-speaking communities to increase access and remove barriers to health, education and social services through direct services, advocacy, leadership, and community development.

Thanks for having us for a great night. I was so inspired by many Portuguese speakers and I am proud of my small contribution and being a part of this community. This exciting evening of inspiring award recipients, cultural entertainment, glamorous red carpet arrival, silent and live auctions, and an elegant banquet helped the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) raised close to $207,000 at the nonprofit organization’s 2019 Awards Gala.

This weekend has been crazy! Last night was very Japanese and tonight was very Portuguese speaker-ish? night. I mean I saw different energy from different communities. I met my ex-student, Erica. She used to train Muay Thai with me and participated in this event with her husband. It was great to see her family and introduce my wife to them.

Music! Dance! lots of fun!!

Great live music

Of course she was the only one wearing kimono

Whenever we come across a formal invitation to certain events, people usually take a good look at the dress code and actually wonder about it. In all honesty, people all tend to get super excited when a particular event asks you to dress up in a particular way. It’s a pretty good excuse for shopping but it also means getting stressed out on what’s the best possible attire to wear. With that being said…Kimono is cheating lol. I wish I have more kimono selections like my wife has! if you’re a normal guy, like me, chill... I made it and thankfully I got word ”Tateki, you look good!” from some people. Yes, I survived at a Black tie event!

Nao Matsuda, you rock again!! Homon-gi (formal style kimono)

Congratulations to all the 2019 MAPS Gala Award Recipients. They are and continue to be an inspiration not only in the Portuguese speakers’ community but also all immigrants like my wife and me. We had such a wonderful time with beautiful guests, outstanding honorees, delicious food, great music and dancing, and a strong community! Thanks for inviting us to the MAPS 2019 Awards Gala! We both felt high positive energy of this community and learned from their beautiful life stories.
