A Biohacker's Chronicle: Amsterdam 2023
A Biohacker's Journey: Amsterdam 2023
Amsterdam, the city of canals and historic charm, opened its arms to a confluence of biohackers in 2023, among which I was thrilled to be. However, the unfolded narrative was not confined to the summit halls but meandered through personal encounters and whimsical turns of events, much like the city’s picturesque waterways.
With family in tow, we landed in Amsterdam, only to discover my luggage had fancied a detour to Paris. Despite this initial hiccup, the journey took a comforting stride as our Dutch friends enveloped my children with care, making the expedition serene and possible.
The summit was a whirlpool of innovation, yet it was my wife who became the epitome of grace amidst modernity as she orchestrated a traditional tea ceremony at the VIP dinner and a live Kimono experience at the venue. Her presence after four long years at the summit was a proud moment, a beautiful blend of the past meeting the future.
Among the encounters, a nostalgic one was with a dear friend since my teenage years, whose family rendezvous in Amsterdam added warmth to the experience. We both left Japan back in 2004. I didn’t expect him to bring his lovely wife and newborn kid to the summit in Amsterdam!
However, another unexpected yet exhilarating encounter was with Alistair Overeem at the summit venue. Our paths had crossed on the same fight card on UFC Fight Night 50 back in Sep 2014, and this accidental meeting rekindled memories of the adrenaline-fueled past.
As the days rolled, pride swelled within me for Team Japan, whose remarkable efforts during the biohacker week mirrored the discipline and innovative spirit that the land of the rising sun embodies. Their dedication and execution were nothing short of exemplary.
As the summit neared its closure, the closing ceremony became a tableau of human endeavor and cultural richness that still dances in my thoughts. A 16th-generation Japanese Samurai, with a blend of precision and grace, performed a purification ceremony with his ancestral sword. Scientists from Belarus and Russia, in a surreal display, levitated water in microgravity to the ethereal tunes of a Ukrainian Siberian shamanistic flutist. Shamans from diverse tribes chanted healing songs for Mother Earth. At the same time, Japanese Zen priests, with a serenity only they could emanate, played hand pans and sang in Sanskrit, weaving a spiritual ambiance that transcended the physical realm.
As the echoes of the summit's closing chants mingled with the autumn breeze, an emotional motivation for the Tokyo Summit 2024 ignited within me. The enthralling journey in Amsterdam, the mingling of the past and the future, the camaraderie, and the unyielding spirit of exploration have all morphed into a burning ember of anticipation for the experiences that Tokyo holds.
The narrative of Amsterdam 2023 is not just a tale of a biohacker amidst a sea of innovation but a chronicle of personal journeys intertwining with the grand tapestry of biohacking ethos. It's a chapter where every encounter, be it planned or accidental, every shared laugh and every acquired insight has become a precursor to the uncharted narratives awaiting in Tokyo. As the city of Amsterdam basks in the gentle autumn sun, the tale of a biohacker's chronicle etches itself not just in the digital realms but in the heartbeats of those who lived, laughed, and embarked on a quest for the optimized self amidst the quaint charm and futuristic visions that Amsterdam 2023 tendered.
