A Special Visit from Veronika: A Colleague's First Time in Boston
It's not every day that a colleague from across the world visits your hometown, so when Veronika, one of my esteemed colleagues at Biohacker Center in Helsinki, made her way to Boston, I was thrilled to show her around. Veronika and I often cross paths at events in Europe, where our work with Biohacker Center brings us together. However, this was the first time she had ventured to my side of the Atlantic, and I was eager to give her an authentic Boston experience.
We kicked off the day with a visit to one of Boston's most iconic spots—Union Oyster House. As we settled in for lunch, I couldn’t help but think about how special it was to share a meal in a place so rich with history. After all, the Union Oyster House has been serving seafood since 1826, making it the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the United States. Veronika was delighted by the atmosphere; the fresh oysters were a hit. It was the perfect start to her Boston adventure.
I took Veronika to Broadway Jiujitsu, my go-to gym in the city. As someone who takes their training seriously, I was excited to share this part of my life with her. Not only did she watch me train, but she also jumped right in and trained alongside me. We even did a Muay Thai class together, which was a fantastic experience. Not every day does you get to train with a colleague from halfway across the world, and seeing Veronika’s enthusiasm and skill was genuinely inspiring. The camaraderie we built through shared sweat and effort made the day even more memorable.
Our next stop was a bit different—my work with GF Ramen Lab, another startup company I’m involved with. I wanted to show Veronika the diverse aspects of my life, and this was a great opportunity. I took her through cooking ramen, and we even shot some social media content together featuring a beautifully crafted bowl of ramen. It was fun, and Veronika got a real taste of what I do outside the Biohacker Center. My kids, who adore Vero, were thrilled to be part of the action. They eagerly helped out where they could, and they would clearly miss her when the day ended.
As the evening drew close, we all gathered for a quiet moment at home. My kids, who had grown quite attached to Veronika during her short stay, were sad to see her go. It was touching to see how quickly they had bonded with her, and it reminded me of how special it is to have colleagues who feel more like family.
Veronika’s visit to Boston was more than just a chance to show off my hometown; it was an opportunity to deepen our friendship and share parts of my life that she might not have known otherwise. Whether we enjoyed classic New England seafood, sparring in the gym, or whipping up a bowl of ramen, the day was filled with moments I’ll cherish for a long time.
Experiences like these make our work with Biohacker Center so rewarding—not just the advancements in health and wellness that we’re passionate about but the connections we make along the way. Veronika’s visit reminded us that no matter how far apart we may live, our shared experiences and friendships keep us close.
Until next time, Veronika—Boston will always welcome you back with open arms.
