Osechi
Osechi are a beloved part of the Japanese New Year celebration. The tradition dates back to over 1,000 years ago when people in Japan would prepare special foods to celebrate the arrival of the new year. These traditional New Year foods are an important part of the holiday, and they are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and history.
One of the most iconic elements of Osechi is the special boxes they are served in. These boxes are called jūbako, and they are typically stacked in multiple tiers, with each layer containing a different type of food. The jūbako are often beautifully decorated, and they make for an impressive and elegant display on the table.
As a Japanese family living abroad, my family and I wanted to keep our tradition alive and share it with our little one. So, this year, we make our own Osechi for the New Year's celebration. We were excited to share this important part of our cultural heritage with our child and keep our connection to our roots strong.
We prepared a selection of classic Osechi dishes and carefully arranged the dishes in our jūbako boxes, with each layer containing a different type of food. The result was a beautiful and delicious spread that we were proud to share with our loved ones.
Osechi is a deeply important part of Japanese culture and history. The tradition of preparing and sharing these special New Year's foods has been passed down for generations, and it continues to be a cherished part of the holiday to this day. We were honored to keep our tradition alive and share it with our little one, ensuring that our cultural heritage remains a vital part of who we are.
